Wowza and Digital Rapids Partner to Refine Streaming Media Infrastructures for Desktop, Mobile and IPTV Video

Evergreen, Colo. (PRWEB) April 7, 2010

Wowza Media Systems®, the media server company, announced today a partnership with Digital Rapids, the leading provider of tools and solutions for bringing television, film and Web content to wider audiences. The collaboration is designed to streamline infrastructures for businesses eager to stream video at the highest quality to all digital screens – mobile, desktop and IPTV.

Together, the Wowza Media Server 2 and Digital Rapids’ multi-format encoding and live streaming systems enable content creators, distributors and broadcasters to efficiently bring content to multiple viewing platforms and player technologies. Digital Rapids’ latest release, the StreamZHD Live ABR™ adaptive streaming system, encodes and streams live HD and SD content with unparalleled quality and performance using the latest in adaptive bitrate delivery technologies. Combined with the Wowza Media Server 2, the unified solution enables simultaneous streaming to multiple players and devices using a single multi-bitrate encoder source — freeing organizations from the traditional financial and resource burdens of deploying and operating separate client-specific encoder and server infrastructures.

“As the adoption of new video-optimized devices and technologies continues to accelerate, content creators and distributors are looking for scalable, cost-effective solutions to efficiently reach all of these varied viewing platforms,” said Brian Stevenson, Director of Product Management at Digital Rapids. “We’re pleased to be working with Wowza to ensure compatibility between our solutions, and help our mutual customers bring the highest-quality content to the most people on the greatest number of screens.”

The Wowza Media Server 2 is the only software on the market to natively implement concurrent streaming support for Adobe® RTMP protocol suite, Apple® HTTP Streaming, Microsoft® Smooth Streaming, RTSP/RTP delivery for Apple QuickTime™, mobile and other clients as well as MPEG-TS for OTT IPTV set-top delivery.

“Viewers consume online video content in different ways, but the goal of any organization in the business of online video should be simple: deliver high quality video content to the greatest number of people,” said Dave Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder of Wowza Media Systems. “Today, that means being able to deliver the same exceptional video experience to a desktop with Flash®, an iPad® or iPhone® via HTTP streaming, or a laptop supporting Microsoft Silverlight®, regardless of where they are or what network connection they are using. That’s what our companies are accomplishing together and we’re doing it in a way that not only delivers a higher efficiency than traditional methods, but it does so much more affordably.”

In addition to the technology synergies between Wowza’s unified media server and the StreamZHD Live ABR encoder, Wowza Media Server 2 also works in concert with other Digital Rapids systems including their TouchStream® portable live steaming appliance, StreamZ™ and StreamZHD™ turnkey systems, and the DRC-Stream™ board-and-software bundles.

Both companies will be demonstrating their latest media streaming innovations at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 12-15; Wowza in booth #SU9310 and Digital Rapids in booth # SL6010.

Panvidea’s Doug Heise to Speak at P2P and Cloud Media Summit at Digital Hollywood Spring

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 30, 2010

Panvidea, a global leader in the on-demand preparation, processing and distribution of entertainment and advertising content, has revealed that it’s VP of Marketing, Doug Heise, will be serving as a panellist at the P2P and Cloud Media Summit at Digital Hollywood Spring in Santa Monica.

The Next Generation P2P & Cloud Panel will focus on the prospects for “content in the cloud,” in the spheres of music, television and film, and will present practical applications and rationales for the use of P2P and cloud computing software in the online content marketplace.

Many distributed computing solutions are on the way, from live streaming to HD content downloading, with associated business models ranging from ad-supported, to subscription, to paid download. Panvidea provides video content owners with an instantly scalable software solution that allows them to automate the video processing, preparation and encoding process, removing any headaches associated with overhead costs and in-house video encoding and delivery resources.

Doug Heise of Panvidea said: “The P2P and Cloud Media Summit at Digital Hollywood is a tremendous opportunity for us to discuss the clear merits of cloud vs. installed software solutions, and to showcase the many ways that Panvidea can enable content owners to maximize the output and digital distribution of their content without having to worry about the overhead costs of software investments and the need to fund in-house teams of video preparation professionals.

“The event should serve to raise our profile in the music, television and film content industries, highlighting the benefits to content owners and helping them to understand that cloud computing is a significantly superior method of preparing and delivering their content .”

Panvidea protects content owners from the need to continually manage hardware, software and personnel resources by outsourcing the entire process, providing SLAs and ensuring the service is continually available on-demand.

Originally branded mPOINT, which was founded in November 2007, the company rebranded to become Panvidea in March 2010, with co-founder Chris Cali as CEO.

Announcing the New Sony NEX-3 & NEX-5, the “World’s Smallest and Lightest Interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras”

The NEX-3 comes in Silver, Black, and Red

New York, NY (Vocus) May 12, 2010

Sony introduced today two innovative alpha compact interchangeable-lens digital cameras (models NEX-5 and NEX-3), that provide the quality of a digital SLR in a compact body that is easy to slip into a small purse or jacket pocket for ultimate portability.

Taking the design concept of an ultra-compact, mirror-less/finder-less digicam advanced by the many Four Thirds (4/3)-format cameras currently on the market, Sony has taken the concept a step further by incorporating a Sony 14.2MP APS-C HD Exmor CMOS sensor (1.5x), which features 58% more surface area than a 4/3-format imaging sensor, and about 13 times the surface area of most point-and-shoot imaging sensors. And since sensor size is a major factor when it comes to resolving power, Sony’s NEX-series cameras should prove to be a significant upgrade in terms of sharpness and dynamic range, compared to comparable sub-compact offerings.

There are many interesting innovations in the Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3. The Sony NEX-series cameras are the first interchangeable-lens digital cameras designed to tackle continuous autofocus and exposure adjustment while recording video, something few other cameras can do. Video is indeed the one major area, aside from size, where the two new cameras differ: The Sony NEX-5 supports 1080i AVCHD video recording, while the Sony NEX-3 is limited to 720p video capture.

The NEX-series cameras are designed to use Sony E-series lenses, a new compact line of optics designed to work with the reduced flange distance that resulted from the removal of the reflex viewing system. The new E-series optics also incorporate silent AF and iris control, to eliminate camera noise when shooting video.

In addition to Sony E-series optics, you can also use any of Sony’s traditional DSLR lenses (as well as all Minolta AF-mount optics) on NEX-series digicams by using the optional LA-EA1 lens adapter. (Manual focus and full-open aperture metering only)

Another creative imaging feature that has been brought over from their Cyber-shot line is Sony’s Sweep Panorama mode, which captures up to 60 individual images and stitches them together in-camera to produce 23MB panoramic images up to 226-degree horizontal or 151-degree vertical shots with 16mm lens. Here too, the results should prove to be that much sharper and snappier due to the larger imaging sensor.

Both models will be ready for 3D Sweep Panorama this July (with firmware update). With 3D Sweep Panorama mode, these cameras can shoot 3D panoramic still images with a single lens. The high-speed burst of frames is stitched together using innovative processing techniques to automatically create detail-packed 3D panoramas. These files can be enjoyed in stunning 3D on compatible 3D televisions. (Other accessories may be required)

These cameras provide the advantages of multi-frame capture featured in Cyber-shot® cameras, including Hand-Held Twilight and Anti-motion Blur modes, which offer extraordinary low-light performance.

Fasig-Tipton Installs Scala-Powered Digital Signage Network to Drive Thoroughbred Sales

Exton, PA (PRWEB) June 23, 2010

Established in 1898, Fasig-Tipton Company Inc. has dominated the thoroughbred auction industry with innovative business practices since it sold the great Man o’ War as a yearling in Saratoga in 1918. The company recently demonstrated innovation again when it became the first thoroughbred horse auction company to deploy a mobile digital signage network. The digital network has improved buyer experiences at Fasig-Tipton’s auction locations, which move around the country from city to city.

Fasig-Tipton contracted with Hammond Communications Group to design, implement and manage the mobile network, which is built on the Scala 5 software platform. Hammond was challenged to create a cost-effective, mobile, solid-state network that could input many sources of content and redistribute the content to 65 LCD screens positioned throughout a 1-square-mile facility.

The screens are a combination of public displays that broadcast exciting racing content, and interactive kiosks that deliver on-demand horse-specific information. Fasig-Tipton is able to stream exciting high-definition, live-action content such as racing feeds during auctions to attract and excite potential thoroughbred buyers. At the same time, patrons can use a remote control to change channels and access the specific content required to make a purchase decision such as a horse’s latest updates, workout videos and sales results.

“Before the new digital signage network, we used banks of TVs set up with DVD players showing pre-recorded horse performances, but all of this can now be presented in real-time, in high definition,” said Max Hodge, Director of Client Services, Fasig-Tipton. “Our customers absolutely love the system, and our competitors haven’t been able to come close to matching it.”

Because auctions are held all over the United States, Fasig-Tipton required mobile technology. Hammond built the system and cabled it in road-worthy, shock-mounted mobile racks that can be rolled in, plugged in and up and running quickly at each auction site. The network includes two servers and more than 20 media players, providing 720p channels and supporting multiple content sources, including VGA, DVI, HDMI, SD/SDI, HD/SDI, HD cameras, live Internet streaming, OFT and satellite. The completely mobile digital signage network features:

    Six interactive touch-screen kiosks;
    AS400 database integration;
    Web site integration;
    International racing feed capabilities on up to 10 contiguous channels;
    On-demand high-definition video library searchable by Horse ID numbers (HIPs);
    Satellite feed capabilities through two channels;
    Four channels of off-the-air broadcast capability;
    65 LG high-definition displays ranging from 26-inches to 55-inches;
    High-definition Sony remote-controlled cameras for live camera feeds; and,
    High-definition tote board auction display.

The Scala-driven system has already supported Fasig-Tipton at more than 13 sales in five different locations.

BEASD Turns to StrandVision Digital Signage for School Communications

Bald Eagle Area School District Student Marketing Screen

Bellefonte, PA (Vocus) August 18, 2010

StrandVision LLC today announced that Bald Eagle Area School District (BEASD) has selected StrandVision Digital Signage for student and community communications at its middle-high school that serves 12 northern Centre County, Pennsylvania communities.

The signage carries several school communication messages, including student notices and after-school activities/bus schedules, sports notices and results, awards and recognition, event promotions and recaps. It also serves as a bulletin board for the public in support of the many community meetings that take place at the school complex. The same digital signage network of large (60”) screens is used to display streaming video feeds from the gymnasium to the cafeteria to accommodate overflow audiences at community events.

The digital signage, which is updated daily by school staff, takes advantage of StrandVision’s Internet-based digital signage delivery system. StrandVision provides digital signage page templates, split screens, crawling text and the ability to post pictures, text and graphics at any time. It also offers automatically updated local weather and news. The BEASD displays are all located in the middle-high school building complex, but, using StrandVision’s Internet distribution, can easily be extended to each of the buildings in the District.

Commented Bill Corkill, BEASD instructional technology specialist and activities director, “We first looked at doing our own signage. But the StrandVision price point was so good that we decided to use the service that they offered. It’s made it easy for us to update the signage right from our computers and rely on StrandVision to automatically update the displays.”

“BEASD is making good use of the StrandVision system by extending it beyond the student marketing during the school day to meet its particular needs and reach the general community,” said Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “They’ve taken advantage of the system’s flexibility to get the greatest return. BEASD had well-defined objectives that they translated into an effective system that supports its educational and community missions.”
